Summer Intern

Each summer, Putnam hires rising seniors from top universities to spend 10 weeks assisting with casework while being exposed to a genuine consulting experience.

Being a Summer Associate Consultant at Putnam is an excellent opportunity to gain insight on the strategic issues that face today’s pharmaceutical companies, as well as specific changes affecting the healthcare marketplace. Summer Associates work in project teams of 4-7 individuals led by a Manager or Partner. Duties include:

  • Prepare and conduct primary research with physicians, patients, managed care
  • Gather secondary research from healthcare literature and internal sources
  • Analyze client and market data
  • Work with project team to develop client presentations

At Putnam, we pride ourselves on a team-based approach that is client focused and impact oriented. We serve many of the industry leaders, including all of the top 10 global biopharmaceutical companies. Almost all of our studies combine sophisticated quantitative analytics with significant qualitative fact-finding and synthesis to inform strategic decision-making. Our diverse casework spans portfolio prioritization, development pathway and resource optimization, market assessment, product pricing and launch strategies, market segment growth strategies, sales and marketing strategies, franchise development and patent expiration strategies. While the client-service core of our work can be demanding, we pride ourselves on the collegial, friendly and balanced environment at Putnam where consulting can be a long-term career option.

The Summer Internship Program takes place in our Boston office. Additional offices are located in the vibrant cities of San Francisco, New York City, and London.

Desired Skills & Experience

The ideal candidate for the Summer Associate position will be a rising senior whose educational background demonstrates success in quantitative and qualitative analysis and who is strongly considering consulting as a future career option. An interest in healthcare and pharmaceuticals is advantageous, as are previous scholastic, extra-curricular and internship-related experience that demonstrates analytical rigor and leadership capabilities.

Please note this is not a summer program for PhDs and MBAs at this time.

The incredible exposure and collaboration I experienced through my case-work and teams really solidified my interested in life sciences strategy consulting. My internship ended with a strong sense of both an associate’s everyday workstreams and the highly supportive culture Putnam continuously fosters–accepting a full time offer was an easy decision!

Over the course of my summer internship, I learned a great deal about the intricacies of the healthcare industry and the various ways in which Putnam’s work fits into that. However, what ultimately made me decide to come back as a full-time associate was the opportunity to work with incredibly bright and talented colleagues on teams that produce excellent work for our clients.
